“Next Steps for Families" Workshop
This workshop is geared towards parents and caregivers of young children who have recently been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Next Steps for Families workshop will include an overview of ASD and other conditions which commonly occur alongside autism. Available therapies and treatments will be reviewed and the presenters will provide tips for choosing what options might be best as a family navigates their child’s ASD diagnosis.
Presenters will include experts in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, social work, and psychology. There will be opportunities for discussion with presenters, as well as with a panel of parents who have taken the next steps with their children.
The next “Next Steps for Families” Workshop will be held in Fall 2020. In-person and online participation will be available. Stay tuned for dates!
"Next Steps in Adolescence" Workshop
Typical traits of ASD, such as difficulty reading social cues and understanding the behaviors of others, add to the already complicated physical and social changes when approaching and entering the teenage years. The topics covered in the Next Steps to Adolescence workshop are designed to provide support and information for parents, caregivers and professionals working with individuals with ASD as they enter this stage in their lives.
Presenters will include experts in psychology, behavior, education, medicine, and social work, as well as a panel of parents who have taken the next steps to meet the transition needs of their children with ASD as they move into adolescence.
The next “Next Steps into Adolescence” Workshop will be held in Fall 2020. In-person and online participation will be available. Stay tuned for dates!
"Next Steps into Adulthood" Workshop and Resource Fair
The transition from adolescence into adulthood can be an exciting yet daunting time for young adults with ASD and their families. This workshop will present tips and tools to help older teens and young adults with ASD find their road to a more independent adult life. Young adults with ASD and their family members, caregivers and professionals will attend separate presentations throughout the workshop. The transition into adulthood can be challenging but can be a motivational opportunity for self-advocacy and independence in individuals with ASD who are taking the next steps into adulthood.
The Spring 2020 “Next Steps into Adulthood” Workshop is postponed out of an abundance of caution regarding COVID-19. Please stay tuned for a rescheduled date.)
"Next Steps for Professionals" Workshop
This workshop is geared towards professionals who work with toddlers through elementary school-aged children with ASD. Parents/caregivers are also welcome to attend. Topics include an overview of ASD, how diagnoses are made, available therapies and treatments and how to decide what interventions to pursue, tips for supporting families living with ASD and information about some of the current research related to ASD.
Presenters will include specialists in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, social work, and researchers from the Center for Autism Research. Attendees will also participate in a discussion with a panel of parents who have taken the next steps with their children.
